Marriott Bonvoy Brand Tiers: What Each Group Actually Delivers

Marriott groups its hotels into Luxury, Premium, Select and Longer Stays, alongside Collections of individually styled properties. These groups describe the kind of stay a brand is designed to offer. They are not award-price bands or Marriott Bonvoy membership levels.

JW Marriott, W Hotels and EDITION belong to Luxury alongside The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis. Westin and Sheraton sit in Premium; Courtyard and Moxy sit in Select. A higher brand group does not automatically make a hotel the better booking for your trip.

Marriott Hotel Brands by Tier

The examples below follow Marriott’s brand portfolio. This is a guide to the main groups, not an exhaustive list of every brand and partnership.

Which Marriott Luxury Brand Fits Your Trip?

Marriott distinguishes Classic Luxury from Distinctive Luxury. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and JW Marriott fall in the first group. W Hotels, EDITION, The Luxury Collection and Ritz-Carlton Reserve fall in the second. These are positioning distinctions, not a promise that one group is universally superior.

For a traditional luxury brief, compare Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis first. St. Regis emphasizes butler service and signature rituals; Ritz-Carlton emphasizes refined service. Our Ritz-Carlton vs. St. Regis comparison examines that choice in more detail.

W is the more obvious starting point when social spaces are part of the attraction. EDITION puts design and contemporary style at the center of its proposition. JW Marriott emphasizes well-being. The Luxury Collection requires especially close property research: the individual hotel’s setting and identity are the reason to choose it.

When Premium or Select Is the Better Booking

Choose the property around the trip. For a city break spent mostly outside, a well-located Premium or Select hotel can be a better use of the budget than a Luxury hotel requiring longer transfers. For a resort trip, compare the facilities you will actually use before paying for a higher brand group.

Longer Stays is also a format decision. A kitchen and additional living space may matter more than a lobby bar when you are away for a week. Check the actual room description and housekeeping arrangements rather than assuming every hotel in a group offers the same setup.

Brand Tier Does Not Determine Your Elite Benefits

A more expensive brand does not automatically provide a better Bonvoy benefits package. Under Marriott’s program terms, eligible Platinum Elite members and above have a restaurant-breakfast welcome-gift option at St. Regis. The Ritz-Carlton and EDITION do not offer that breakfast option. Ritz-Carlton Club access is excluded from complimentary elite upgrades.

Before booking, check breakfast, lounge access, upgrade eligibility and late-checkout rules for that brand and property. Compare the benefits you will receive, rather than those you associate with the logo.

Marriott Brand Tiers and Points Pricing Are Different Things

Do not attach a fixed points range to a brand. Marriott uses flexible point redemption rates, with requirements that can change by date and availability. A brand label cannot tell you what a particular night will cost.

Search your actual dates in both cash and points, using comparable room types and cancellation terms. Include charges still payable on an award stay. Our hotel points versus cash framework explains that calculation. A Luxury redemption does not automatically beat a lower-tier cash booking.

Choose the Hotel, Not Just the Tier

Use the brand groups to narrow the field, then compare actual hotels. Start with Luxury when the hotel experience is central to the trip, Premium or Select when location and practical value lead, and Longer Stays when space and facilities matter most. With Collections, investigate the property first. Book the hotel that fits the trip at the price offered on your dates.
